TESL/Bilingual Education – Domestic

Many graduates teach in U.S. K–12 schools, while others teach internationally. Graduates hold supervisory positions in ESL, bilingual/bicultural education, and world languages; work as researchers or curriculum developers; and pursue further studies in areas such as education leadership, international education, elementary education, linguistics, education psychology, and literacy.

*TCNJ offers graduate courses in education at satellite sites throughout the state of NJ. Several leading New Jersey school districts have partnered with The College of New Jersey to offer programs specifically designed for their needs.  Admission Requirements

  • An earned bachelor’s degree from an accredited university, college, or other approved institution.
  • A completed online application.
  • Current resume.
  • Two strong letters of recommendation (e.g., unequivocal endorsements and letters from supervisors familiar with the applicant’s work are weighted favorably).
  • Personal essay.
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) for applicants for whom English is a second language and who have limited experience working/learning in an English language environment.
  • Applicants must also meet the specific admission requirements of their selected certificate programs.

Application Process

Certification

Bilingual Endorsement Program

The Bilingual Endorsement Program provides the necessary courses for certification as a bilingual teacher in New Jersey. This certificate is only for US-certified teachers who hold a US teaching credential in a subject area (elementary or secondary math, science, social studies, etc.).

Upon successful completion, US citizens who hold a US teacher certification will be eligible to apply for a Certificate of Eligibility of Advanced Standing (CEAS) after completing this program of study. Please consult the New Jersey Department of Education Endorsement Code for additional details.

TESL Certificate Program

All students who complete the TESL Certificate program (US-cohort-based) will receive the following:

  1. TCNJ Certificate
  2. Initial or endorsement certification through the NJ Department of Education (CEAS or Standard certificate)

Teaching English as a Second Language, MEd 

All students who complete the TESL MEd program will receive the TCNJ diploma.
